CRICKET - IPL Preview

After a COVID induced delay, the Indian Premier League 2020 (IPL 2020) is here. What if we are not playing in India, the stadiums in the United Arab Emirates are all set to provide high-octane entertainment.

As the eight city-based franchises battle it out to be the winner of this unique edition, we look at some value picks. Who are those definite ‘must have’ in your fantasy team? Who should be your captain who can rake in the moolah? With so many big names floating around, it is tough to pinpoint specific ones. We tried zeroing down on five names – three established and two surprise picks. Here we go!

Andre Russell – Kolkata Knight Riders

The absolute rockstar of the league, Russell is a high-value purchase. However, he delivers at the same level which makes him a ‘must have’ in your side. Last season saw him score 510 runs (SR 204.81) and pick 11 wickets (ER 9.51). Not just that, he added 52 sixes to his count and 31 boundaries to highlight his muscle.

An impactful all-rounder, Russell is KKR’s trump card and should be the same for your team too. Making him your captain isn’t a bad choice either.

Rishabh Pant – Delhi Capitals

Another blockbuster pick, Pant is another all-rounder who should walk into your fantasy side. He has 1,736 IPL career runs to his name (Avg. 36.16, SR 162.69) and has been consistent with the bat. The last two seasons saw him score 684 (SR 173.60) and 488 runs (SR 162.66). Throw in his ability to hit long – 94 sixes in IPL career – you have a match-winner!

The biggest positive about Pant is that he’s a confirmed starter in the Delhi Capitals’ side. Unless there’s an injury, he should be a definite pick in your side.

Jos Buttler – Rajasthan Royals

There is something about Jos Buttler that makes him a bowler’s nightmare. Uncluttered thinking, an impressive range of strokes – and the added bonus of being a ‘keeper. His career IPL stats are tremendous – 1,386 runs, Avg. 35.53, SR 150.81.

Buttler will be used at the top by the Royals and that means more chances of picking up points.

Devdutt Padikkal – Royal Challengers Bangalore

To rub shoulders with the likes of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers beside sharing the dressing room with them is in itself a massive success. RCB’s latest young recruit Devdutt Padikkal is all set to set the IPL alight with his performances.

The 20-year-old has shown great form in domestic cricket topping the run charts in the 50-over and 20-over tournaments. With 1,838 runs from 33 matches across formats, Padikkal is ready for his breakout year. And, the advantage is that RCB need a player like him.

Tom Banton – Kolkata Knight Riders

The 21-year-old England batsman is a ‘once in a generation’ player. Pretty similar to Kevin Pietersen in his leg-side play, Banton has already turned heads and zoomed into the England national side. He was the second-highest run-scorer in the 2019/20 T20 blast with 549 runs (SR 161.47).

While his chances are limited in the KKR side, we believe he will get a chance to prove his worth. And when he gets that, Banton will be irresistible. Watch out!
