A chance to clean sweep Australia beckons South Africa as they take a 2-0 lead to the third and final ODI at Potchefstroom. The venue, on Saturday, will host its first ODI in more than five years and is not short of context.
After breaking their year-long hiatus of winning a series, the Proteas will be a confident unit. The Quinton de Kock-led side has a number of proven match winners. On the other hand, Australia will be disappointed at having not taken their chances in both the losses.
South Africa Preview
The hosts came up trumps even without substantial contributions from their best batsman Quinton de Kock. The two ODIs saw Heinrich Klaasen and Janneman Malan lead from the front. All three batsmen, despite contrasting forms, remain top on the list for the Proteas.
Bowling wise, Lungi Ngidi has been a revelation for South Africa. Not only has he been consistent wicket-taking and at crucial times meant South Africa were always in the hunt. Andile Phehlukwayo hasn’t really stepped up, but is another name that can surprise.
It has been a very poor series for the visitors with listless batting performances. Both the ODIs saw the Aussie batsmen struggle to impose themselves. That said, both the results could have been different with a bit of fortune. David Warner, Aaron Finch and Steve Smith remain top of that lot, although picking all three is tough.
That leaves the door open for D’Arcy Short’s selection. He has been impressive with the bat and has also been useful with the ball. The spin-bowling all-rounder could be vital for their chances. Another player promising value is the all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who can be your dark horse pick.
