It was a surprisingly effective ODI performance from Australia in the 1st match at the SCG to defeat India by 34 runs. The stage now moves to the Adelaide Oval for the 2nd ODI on Tuesday. This will be the 120th ODI between the sides, with Australia having a 74-45 edge. That includes five ODIs at this venue, with Australia leading 4-1.
Coming in the middle of the Big Bash League (BBL) (BBL08) 2018/19 season, the series was expected to test the hosts. However, SCG saw a vintage Australia put in the right yards – both with the bat and the ball. It was just their third win in the last 23 games for Australia.
Peter Handscomb, Shaun Marsh and Marcus Stoinis fired with the bat for the Kangaroos. Even Usman Khawaja impressed with a good score, but the form of Aaron Finch remains a concern. Bowling looked impressive with Jhye Richardson (4/26) and Jason Behrendorff (2/39) leading the line.
India started as favourites in the first ODI only to be brought crashing down to earth. The Men in Blue were always supposed to be reliant on their top-order of Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Only Sharma with 133 was able to lead India’s reply, as the Australian fast bowlers cut through the top-order.
MS Dhoni also chipped in with a steady fifty, but it was a disastrous batting performance from the visitors. The lack of a proper all-rounder also hurt their chances and that could force a change in Adelaide. Hardik Pandya is no longer available for selection, but his replacement Vijay Shankar or Kedar Jadhav could get the nod.
Fantasy Players to Watch
Marcus Stoinis is an exciting player to have, not just for his returns, but also for his energy on the field. He smashed 47 from just 43 balls and then picked up 2/66 with some incisive bowling in the death overs. Back him to be in your fantasy XI.
Shaun Marsh continued his excellent batting form with his fourth fifty-plus score in seven matches. He seems to have left his worries from the Tests at home and looks good for another good score.
Kuldeep Yadav proved difficult to get away, once again, and returned figures of 2/54. He takes the pitch out of the equation and should once again enjoy a favourable outing. Having him in your fantasy XI will definitely pay!
