An injury-struck Bangladesh team will have to punch above their weight in their ICC World Cup opener. They take on South Africa, who were comprehensively beaten in their tournament opener. This match will be played at the Kennington Oval in London on Sunday.
Bangladesh start the tournament with little hopes of qualifying for top-four. For South Africa, another loss could be a big blow to their chances of qualification. Regardless of the injuries and form, both sides need to up their game in this crucial match.
South Africa Preview
England exposed South Africa’s weaknesses, as they fell to a 104-run loss. That was their second-worst ever World Cup loss and would have dented their confidence a bit. Hashim Amla had an injury scare after being hit by a bouncer, but should be fit to take the field.
The Proteas will hope that they can plug the loopholes and bounce back. The performance of Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi has certainly given them hopes. Captain Faf du Plessis might be tempted to make changes to their batting unit.
The heavy loss to India in their last practice match somewhat dampened Bangladesh’s spirits. They have been acclimatizing with a tri-series in Ireland. Having won that title and with a squad that is experienced, Bangladesh look to create some upsets.
Tamim Iqbal’s injury is a worry for the Tigers, who are also sweating on the fitness of Mashrafe Mortaza, Mustafizur Rahman, and Mahmudullah. With injuries creating such a problem within the squad, Bangladesh are not expected to stretch South Africa.
Fantasy Players to Watch
Quinton de Kock scored a handy fifty against England, but couldn’t rally his side for long. Another fifty could be in the offing, but South Africa hope he goes to make a hundred.
Mushfiqur Rahim is one of the top run-getters for Bangladesh. He has averaged close to 48 at a SR of 87 in the 59 ODIs since the last World Cup. His consistency makes him a good pick.
Imran Tahir is the oldest player in the World Cup, but has started in the right manner. His two wickets against England showed that Tahir can be a handful this tournament.
Faf will be tempted to bring back David Miller to boost their middle-order, while Amla remains a doubt.
