A comprehensive win over Pakistan and almost a week rest later, India take on Afghanistan in match #28 of the 2019 ICC World Cup. This match will be played at Southampton and is expected to produce a high-scoring game.
Afghanistan are yet to win a game and are rooted to the bottom of the points tally. India, on the other hand, remain unbeaten. They have three wins in the tournament and the match against New Zealand was washed off.
The Afghans are in a mess, both on and off the field. Their performances have been shallow and the unrest within the squad isn’t helping. After winning the ICC qualifier, they were expected to defeat a couple of established sides this year.
That didn’t happen, as the players continue to struggle. Inconsistent scores from the batsmen and the ineffectiveness of the bowlers have left them short. Playing out 50 overs against England is no comfort, either.
India defeated Pakistan easily despite missing Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Vijay Shankar’s all-round excellence and batting at number four is a big bonus. India’s batting looks strong, although Kohli hasn’t yet looked at his best.
India’s bowling also looks strong. Jasprit Bumrah already is in top form, while the wrist spinners are doing well. Hardik Pandya, Kedar Jadhav and Shankar give additional options for Kohli.
Fantasy Players to Watch
Rohit Sharma has been in cracking form this tournament with two centuries already. He will look to keep up his form.
Gulbadin Naib tried his best, with both bat and the ball, against England. His all-round skills will be the key for Afghanistan’s chances.
Mohammed Shami will get a chance to show his worth for the Indian side. He probably has two chances to cement his place and expect him to put his best foot forward.
There could be some changes in the Afghan side as they look to bounce back.
